Could Chiropractic Treatment Help Ease Your Pain?

Chiropractic focuses on the treatment of musculoskeletal system disorders and the nervous system. A chiropractor practices drug-free and hands-on medical care to treat musculoskeletal and nervous system conditions that include neck and back pain, joint pain and headaches. Chiropractors generally go through an extensive 4 year training program to learn how to diagnose and treat neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractors often examine X-rays of the spine and neck before making any adjustments in order to restore range of motion and reduce joint pain.

In addition to spinal manipulation, a chiropractor can also recommend additional therapies and rehabilitative regimens to treat these conditions, including massage, ultrasound therapy, electronic stimulation, rehabilitative stretches and exercises.

Controversies Related to Chiropractic Treatment

Although the history of Chiropractic treatment is not without controversy, today it is generally regarded as a relatively safe, and non-invasive therapy that can be used in combination with standard medications. Spinal manipulation can sometimes be effective at restoring patients to near normal functioning.

Chiropractic treatment, like any other health care treatment is not without risk. Some patients experience a little soreness or minor aching after treatment, but this mild discomfort tends to fade within 24 hours of treatment.

Since manipulation is targeted at the joints, chiropractic treatment should be avoided during flare ups of arthritis. Chiropractic manipulation of joints that have active swelling could aggravate the inflammation and amplify the pain. A more serious risk is the possibility of chiropractic causing vertebral artery dissection and a stroke.

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association released a  scientific statement in August 2014 stating “Manipulating the neck has been associated with cervical dissection, a type of arterial tear that can lead to stroke.”

Patients considering chiropractic treatment should always carefully discuss and consider the potential risks and benefits with their healthcare provider before making an informed choice.
